Traditional Cuban Food
Since starting this website in 2001, I'm always
asked by site visitors what dishes are typical to Cuban cuisine. On
the main recipe pages of this website (appetizers, soups, etc) I try
to point out the most traditional dishes.
But just to give you a quick idea, one of the
most traditional of all Cuban meals is Moros y Cristianos, which is
black beans and rice. Other common main dishes include arroz
con pollo (rice with chicken), ropa vieja (shredded beef). The Cuban
sandwich is extremely popular, but keep in mind that it was really
an invention by Cuban workers in Florida as far back as the 1880's.
Traditional Cuban appetizers include tostones,
which are twice-fried plantain slices, sometimes served with mojo
sauce for dipping. Common desserts include flan, tres leches cake,
and pastelitos. Visit the main
recipes page of this website to learn how to prepare a variety
of traditional meals.
